\ « _ The health of Sir Frederick Whitaker is said to be very precarious. Mass will be celebrated next Sunday in St- Bridget's Church at' 8 a.m. On Tuesday afternoon Sir George Grey went through to Wellington by the mail tram. He was looking well aud strong. We regitet to learn from the Pahiatua Star that Mr E. Beaufort, who was for some years a resident in Feilding, died at Pahiatua on Tuesday last, aged 71 years. It is probable that the Middle Party in the House will comprise Sir George Grey, Messrs G. Fishei'j Reesj Shera, the two Hutchisons. (father and son), and the two Auckland Thompsons. The " Wonderful Stove" the "Russell" is advertised to-day by Vt Whitworth Russell, X>f the Yankee Store Depot Wanganui, who has entrusted the agency in Feilding to Mr. William Reading, who haf» one of these useful articles on view in his office in Manchester Street. We are informed by Mr Robert Sornerville that on Monday next he will commence -business on his own account as livery stable keeper, he having leased the commodious stables attached to the Feilding Hotel. As Mr Somerville is wellknownin the town and district as a firstclass man among horses we have.eyery confidence that he will deserve, and receive, a fair share of public patronage. The Feilding State School will be closed for a fortnight after Friday next (to-morrow) for the winter holidays. .The furniture sale to day at Mr W. G. Shearer's was very well attended and the pilots realised were up to expectations Captain Edwin telegraphs : — Weather forecast for 24 hours from 9 a.m. to-day— Telegrams to expect frost haye been sent to all places. A letter from Mr Lankshear, the secre tary of the Muiigaono School Committee, will appear in our next issue. The funeral of the late Mr Saint John Watson, wbich took place yesterday, was largely attended by local residents, aud friends from Palmerston. Mr .Walton officiated at the ceremony. '< A big football practice will be held on the Oval on Saturday 'afternoon when the players of both the first and second fif- , teens are requested to attend. Yesterday the corner section in Fergusson Street, next to Mr Hamiltan's and opposite the Denbigh Hotel, changed hands at a satisfactory figure L375.^ A Palmerston resident was the purchaser. Owing to some members of the Company missing a steamer for Wellington, I the Carl Hartz troupe did not perform lin Feilding last night. The Assembly , Rooms have been engaged for a mght next week. The first contest under the auspicies of the New Zealand Brass Band Association will be held in Dunedin at the end of December next. It was originally intended that the contest should be held in November. Wellington will probably be represented by the Garrison Band. The agricultural statistics for the Colony reVeal a startling falling-off in gram yield. The RegistrarrGeneral estimates the loss at not, less- than half a million. There, is a large decrease in the number of holdings in Otago and Canterbury, but considerable increase in WeUington and Hawke's Bay. Yesterday afternoon a son of Mr Garlick (who is a driver for ' Mr- Daw) .was phiymg, in the backyard, behind a man who was cutting firewood. ' He was hit with the back of the axe, which made a deep cut in the face. Dr Sorley attended to the little sufferer who is now doing well; The Dobson- Kennedy Company haye had splendid support in every town they visited since 'their last appearance in Feilding. They will play a season in Palmerston and will on " their return trip ma few months, pay. another visit to Feilding where we have no doubt they will be accorded a hearty welcome. The canvas made for the gift auction and tea, ou Thursday next, in aid of the Presbyterian' Manse fund, has been' attended with something like a phenomenal success. . It is believed that nearly £100 worth will be contributed. The concert will consist mainly of solos by musical' performers who have never before sung in Feilding. Full particulars and programme will be given on Saturday. The following players will represent the Red Star Club in their match against a Sandon team, at Sandon, on Saturday, next :—Full-back— F. - Foster ; threequarters — P. Roache, H, Scott, P. Giesen ; halves— R. Parr, T. Corkery ; forwards — Aitken, W. .Giesen, A;'. Beechy, Newman, Mingins, • J, Robinson, W. Smith, J. Bishop, B. Parkes ; emergencies—Arnott, H. Cqombe, and A.' Foster. Mr Butler, Land Purchase Officer, has now almost completed the purchase for the Government of the Kapua Block of 20,000 acres, situated between Wanganui and Karioi, on the ' banks of the Wangahue River. The land is said to be of excellent quality, and mostly covered'with light bush. It is well adapted for settle-' hient, and as only a few signatures are now required lo complete the title, it is to be hoped the Government will use the block for settlement purposes at an early date. — Post. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Feilding School Committee was held at the schoolroom last evening. Present — Messrs F. Y. Lethbridge (chairman), H. Worsfold (secretary), Gould, Shearer, Morey, and Curtis. The minutes of thelast meeting were read and confirmed. The head master's report showed the average atteadance for the past quarter was 256. The Chairman announced that the Board had agreed to effect certain necessary repairs to the school buildings. A list of " irregular attendants" was read by the Chairman, and it was resolved that the list be handed to the Truant Inspector. The visiting committee for the past month (Messrs Gould and Shearer) made a favorable report as to the working of the school. Messrs Morey and Curtis were appointed visiting committee for the ensuing term, after which the meeting adjourned. The death of " Lord " Henry Russell reminds us of an old Canterbury story. A wealthy, but not over-liberal sheepfarmer whose flocks were not too clean, was camped out one night with a halfcaste guide travelling with him, and as, they were yarning over the fire after supper the name of " Ready Money Robin-' son" was mentioned; The squatter suddenly said : " Oh, by-the-way, lots of these men have nick names, for instance* there's ' Lord Henry Russell,' ' Ready Money Robinson,' 'White Headed -Bob the - Liar/ ' The Blue and Red Keens/ and others, now what do they call me ?" His companion sniggered) moved uneasily about, and at last positively declined to give a reply. However, after much persuasion, and a guarantee that no evil would attend the revelation, he gasped out :' " They call you ' Scabby D '."
