The Baccarat Scandal

In the course of his reply in the baccarat ' case to-day, Sir Edward Clarke, -Solicitor General, declared that after the evidence which had be.en taken it was impossible ito remove Sir William Gordon Cumming's name from the Army List'vwithout also erasing the names of H.R.H. the Prince of -Wales and General Owen Williams. This statement created an immense sensation in Court. , H.R.H. Prince of Waleshas nominated Mr Stanley Wilson, who gave evidence in the -baccarat case, as a member of the Marl borough Club. ' "} , June 9. In the baccarat case a verdict wa returned for defendant. Public sympathy in the baccarat case is on the side of Sir W. Cumming, ' June 10. . The „ Times, referring to the result of the baccarat ease, expresses its profound regret that the Prince of Wales was concerned in the affair, as the case may had been a serious effect on the public mind. The Times hopes that His Royal Highness will make a resolve never to touch the cards again, and also determine to eschew questionable pleasures. On the whole the Press severely censure the Prince of Wales, but opinion is evenly divided as to Sir William Cumming's guilt.
