Pohangina Notes

(FBOM OTTE OWN COEEESPONDENT.) On Friday and Saturday .last we had • very .rough weather^ with occasional storms of rain, hail, and snow,- varied - with heayy- thunder" and lightning. The snow flakes were very large, and in a very, short time the ground was covered with snow three inches in depth. When the weather, cleared up on Saturday afternoon, and the, sun was setting, the snow on the west side of the range, contrasted m with a black cloud on the eastern, side,. * was a perfect picture of beauty, so much so that eyen the most matter-of-fact kind of people were lost in admiration of the scene. It was, . however, bitterly cold, and frozen fingers and toes are not conducive to sentiment. Some of the sections " on the Foxton Small Farm Block" were covered with the snow for a long time. The Fohangina river rose a bit* but the fresh was not large enough to prevent people getting over. - . I notice the roadman has beenjencing. along part of the* hill, known ag^ the Horseshoe, to stop the cattle from freaking down the banks, but still thacattle which graze along the road, are' doing, damage in that respect. The " long acre paddock " seems a . great boon to some people,; but wait a bit until we; get a. Banger up this way, and the sides of the roads s and water tables will not be injured so much as they now are. You' would think the road here was a sale yard sometimes. . It would be a great saving to the majority of ratepayers in the Kiwitea road district if this sort of cheap grazing could be done away with, and owners of stock compelled to keep them, within their own fences.
