The parish .is described as " a merry village adjaceut to London, and a favourne i;e/sort for its citizens," and the population is given at 10,121. Now its inliabitauts number 358,000. Auothe ■■ -entry in the curious volume has raised "a 1 startling controversy • am uug local antiquaries. The genial Oliver is "geueraily t supposed " to have lived and died a bachelor. In Islington another tradition exists. It ' is -to- the effect -that not only had -'♦Oliver a little habitation there, wtere _ r he spent a good deal s of his time, tut by his neighbors 'he was regarded as , - a..respectable married citizen. In the 'recently found book occurs the name jjti Mary Olivia Goldsmith,, and it is ■ stated that this was none other than -' the poet's daughter.
