; PALMEBSt6n V. FEILDING. 1 This .contest was played on the Oval on Saturday. It was anticipated the visitors would achievean easy victory, but it was not the case, -because it was only during the last twenty minutes of the second spell, that they pulled the game out of the fire: Th^ winners came with a great reputation, but they certainly did not play up to expectations. The local club's team was undoubtedly the weakest they have placed in the field for three years. Having lost the services of Gregory, Iveson, Shannon, and Tennant, has weakened the team considerably. This is the first defeat Feilding has suffered for three seaBonß,"during which time they have played no less than, thirty -four matches. This record is, 1 t believe, unbeaten in the colonies', and Lwas much pleased to see our local men take the defeat in such good part and spirit. " During the afternoon a large concourse of, of spectators, including a number of ladies,' assembled to witness the match, and were by a firstclass exhib'ition'of football," but I was sorry to notice that one-oftthe Palmerston players indulged in sorne, v v€ry unnecessary violence, by wantonly kicking several of the players among his opponents. This player was cautioned by the Beferee, but for all that he -should have been made an example of sent, off the field. The Rugby Union rules provide for cases of this kind/and under'them any player who is guilty of using ob cene lauguage, or rough play, may be brought before the Union and be -either cautioned or suspended for a month -or two. The teams •were veryfevenly matched, and during the first spell both failed to c score. A. Parr had a pot at a goal, but the ball went a foot off the post. Soon afler beginning the •econdjspell, R. Whisker,- who was playing a steVlihg good game, got tjie ball near the visitors' twenty-five, and" dashed over the line between the posts, scoringsfirst blood. The kick at" goal was entrusted to. Joe Hobinson who, greatly to the surprise of eyeryone, failed to convert it into a goal. The" play 'now'became very fixst. The visitors worked the game into the local men's twenty-five, where Isherwood got the ball and potted a goal very neatly. This gave the visitors a lead of one point, -and there being only twenty minutes left, it was not to be 'expected that the local men would.be able to equalise the score. "However, they struggled manfully and carried the game into the visitors' quar-ters,-wben the ball was passed'to A. Parr, \>ut Jewell smartly intercepted the pass by getting the balJ before it reached Parr, and having no one in his way "he had a <;]ean.ruri over the line. The kick was intrusted to Jackson, : who placed an undeniable goal.- 'Shortly afterwards no side was called, Palmerston winning by 5 points'Jo;!.. • The winners' backs were about the best I have seen put in the field, and everyone of them 'played a first-class game, being in this department far superior to Feilding, but in the forward division the Feilding-men proved the superior. Each of the two captains was a host in bimseJf,~and it would be hard to find their equals 'in any team. For the winners Jackson, lsherwood, Jewell, Key, Stallard, Oliphanfc and Carroll were the most prominent. ' For the losers R. Whisker, H. JKeightley, Nicholson and Matravers deserve special, mention for the good form they displayed. The backs , acquitted themselves fairly well, but A. Parr played nothing like his usual game, but I hardly -expected to see him in the contest at all, ■because it is well known that he has not recovered from the effects of injuries he received in the Marton match. E.. Parr and Giesen, the emergency men, had to fill the places of 0. Bray, and Cornwall, Messrs G- Saywell and C. Pratt umpired for Feilding arid Palmerston respectively, •while Mv Fowler acted as referee, and hiß ■decisions^ were fair and just all through. -'-'.' . Drop Kick.
