Speech by the Minister of Lands
* The Minister of Lands, Mr McKenzie, delivered a speech at Falmerston South, i last evening to his constituents. The Hon gentleman's speech was exceedingly lengthy. After dealing with the retrenchment policy of the Government, Mr Me - Kenzie touched on the question of reducing the postal rates, no further borrowing, incidence of taxation, reform of the Upper House, etc. Referring to land settlement Mr McKenzie said he was quite prepared to give any. person who paid a for freehold, pure and simple, the right to acquire a certain' area of land, but only on condition that such land was improved, and not held ■ for speculative purposes. This then would give an opportunity of acquiring a" .freehold to those' who wished to do so, but the area would be curtailed, though it would be such an area as would enable a family to live in comfort, and plenty. He also intended to continue the deferred payment system on conditions of residence only. After justifing 1 Mr Ritcher'a appointment to the Stock Department, Mr McKenzie defended himself at length against Mr Spencer's charges. A vote of confidence in Mr McKenzie was carried unanimously. '
