THE PERSECUTION OF THE JEWS IN RUSSIA.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR; ■-„.,_ Sir, — I was surprised to read the" other day,»i.n your interesting paper, dh' article condemning Baron Hirsch's action for the relief of these poor persecuted Jews, immediately there was the slightest proposal to settle these people in Australia; qr the Australasian colonies. Fortunately for them the. proposal dropped, or rather, was cried down, and they are now to be settled elsewhere. But I wish you, or- some of your readers, could give; me some satisfactory reason why these- unfortunate Jews should'not settle in -the uninhabited parts of the Australian' colonies, fell , the bush, work on the land, and help to improve the country generally. You tell us in your. article that they are not " good agriculturists." Haye you any authority for saying so ? I wonder how many " good agriculturists" there are. in New Zealand, certainly not many in this district- We' have men of very nearly every sect in the world struggling to make a living in this country, and why should not a few of the Jews join" us. If there were more men in England and elsewhere like Bai'on Hirscb, there would be less misery, more peace, and noblemen fed" be proud of. In conclusion, I will just mention that I am not a Jew, but I. do like to see the good old saying carried out Live and Let Live.
