|L The members of the Small Holdings and Allotments Association in Scotland have been issuing a aeues o< leaEets upon the small holdings ques tion. One is fro,m the pen of the Rev Mr Campbell, of Bary, Forfai shire, entitled •• Small Holdings : Do they Pay?" .Treating the subject in a practical way, and quoting examples * from Collace in Perthshire, Mr Camptell compares the large and small farming systems :— tl Taking the «rofts,ui; Collaee— 36o acres— with the same extent of land in ime large farm. Ou the crofts there would be houses ' tor 56 20 horses, 75 cows, 150 pigs sent annually to market, the amount Sent amounting to £840, with • hardly any cost for buildings to proprietor. ''Whereas on a* large farm of 360 acres there, would be .house for 1 farmer, temporary residence for 6 ploaghmenyand; 1 boy, with outdoor • labour to 3 females. There would be « working horse 3 and' 1 gig horse ; 3 or 4 cows, some cattle' or sheep, and 2 or 3 pigs , for private use." The annual rent wpu'd.be from £360 to ,£SOO, "with, all ' buildings erected by the proprietor. As Bhow'iug the success of, the small .holdings system, Mr Campbell states 'that where they are established in. the district at Collace, the assessment for poor rates is only l£d in the £, with no pauper on the roll ; while in the neighboring, parish the poor rate stands at 7d per £.
