(from ottr. own correspondent.) Mr Scully, the contractor, has had to postpone metalling until next season, so that we will have to plod through the mud for another year. This woxild not have been the case Had the Kiwitea Road Board made the. contractor push on with, the work. Bush felling has commenced again in earnest and the trees can be heard in all directions as they crash to the earth. I have forwarded you a specimen- ofthe hide and tail of a boar shot the other day. There is a good bag in one of these pigs — when you get him. There are. many corrfplaints of the. negligence of the mail carrier. The time table provides that he shall leave Birmingham on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9 a.m. ; arrive at Apiti at noon ; and leave Apiti at l'p.m. If the contractor brings the mail himself it" reaches here between 12 and 1, but if the packer brings it, the mail does not come until from 1 to 4 i o'clock. Surely the settlers are entitled to more consideration. The contractor seems to think that if the rffail gets at its destination at all that is all "which" is necessary. Many of the settlers live three or four miles away from the post office, and if they have anything to post they must be there before one o'clock and then they have to wait until the mail arrives, or go away without and '• come back ! another day. It looks as if the convenience of the settlers was of no consequence to the mail contractor.
