Extraordinary Murder in New York
1 ' ' (Per 'Frisco Mail steamer.) A man and woman registered ata cheap hotel at New York on, the. night of April 23rd as man and wife. They immediately retired, and as nothing was seen' of them ■ Jnth'e morning, the door was broken in. On the bed lay the woman covered with blood; Her abdomen was ripped open with a. dull broken table knife that lay in the blood. The- viscera had been cut, and from appearances part of it was missing. The man escaped. A very imperfect description of- him was giyen to the police. On ! examination her face and. neck revealed a ghastly visage. The tongue was cut but of her mouth, which was fearfully swollen, her eyes bulged from their sockets, the nose was flattened to the face, "and about the neck was a circle of congealed blood. From appearances theI woman had evidently been strangled first and then cut.' The murderer left- his , mark, a large cross," on the base, of' thespine. The housekeeper said the mur- , dered woman's companion was decidedly a German ,in appearance and resembled * seafaring man. Many said the woman was a'well-kn'own character in the neighborhood, but no 9ns seems to know her or where she livedT The police are scouring the city and vessels around the docks for the murderer. , -, "- " . .
