The Feilding STar. THURSDAY, MAY 21, 1891. Census Returns

The census returns for the Manchester Block disclose very satisfactory results in respect to increase of the population, especially in the rural districts, The following are the figures : —

Giving a total increase of 1276, and omitting the population of th« towns of Feildiug and Halcombe, an increase of the total population settled on rural lands of 1032. The net increase in two towns is 244. The depletion from Halcombe is accounted for by the fact that many families have now removed- from that town to live on farm lands. The increase in Feilding is 287. These -returns show the steady progress the district is makiug. The population of the Colony, exclusive of Maoris, has nob yet been exactly arrived at, but according to the preliminary census returns it may, we understand, be stated at 618,688. This is about 40,000 more than in 1886. Now, the excess of births over deaths during the. past five years amounts to 64,168. We have, therefore, lost in population not only au equivalent to all our immigration, but also 24,000 of our natural increase. The figures (given subject to revision, certain information having been given by wire and a few small things being uncertain) are as follows : —

The comparrison drawn out by fcheCensus Department of the population of the chief cities and suburbs, which may be properly counted as belonging toi them, and showing difference between this and last enumeration, is as follows :—Auckland— now 52,432, against 57,048; Wellington—now 33,138, against 27,833; (this does not include 1982 on board ships) ; Dunedin — now 45,829, against 45;518; -Invercargill — now 7999, against 8839 ; Napier— B43s, against 7680 ; Nelson—667s, against 8305. Returns for Christchurch are not yefc received. A striking feature shown by the recent enumeration is that in every place, except Napier, females are in excess of males. In Dunediu this excess is no less that 2245.
