Judge Edward's Case
[ PEK UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION. | WKLLINGTON, May 20. In reviewing the case, Sir R. Stout argued that the Supreme Oourt Act, 1882, must : be read with the Oiyii List Apt, 1873, Which established salaries for the Chief Justice and four puisne Judges. He alio contended there was no contract with Edwards, and, if so, it was simply for a Commissionersbip. In concluding, he thought it was for- the benefit of thft defendant, thebench, and the colony, that these proceedings have been taken, and the ca9e would be and ought to be a warning to the Executive not to attempt to deal with the high offi-- c of Jud'-e hip of the Supreme Court by making it an addendum to a Native Commissionership and not to appoint a judge without frankly consulting Parliament. The Court has reserved judgement. It is understood the * case 'will go to the Privy Council, whateyer the result.
