The poet said " man's inhumanity to man makes countless thousands mourn," and proof of the truth of these words, which have passed into a proverb, are given every day. On Saturday evening, at the Longburn Railway Station, a young girl named G-race Amner, 14 years of age, was horribly, injured by falling off a truck in motion. The truck passed over her body and inflicted terrible injuries. She was taken to a surgeon, who expressed the opinion she was in a condition to bear the journey by train to the Wanganui Hospital. Accordingly, the sufferer was put in the 5.30 train and sent on. On the arrival of the train at Feilding a gentleman went into the van to see if he could lend any assistance. The little girl was able to express her wants intelligently enough when the train was still, but when shunting began the pain inflicted was so terrible that her shrieks were dreadful to hear. The poor girl reached Wanganui alive, but died yesterday morning. Now this case points to the urgent necessity for the erection of a hospital at Palmerston North. There is no reason for any further delay. If the people there do not act at once after this case, they are not so enterprising as we give them credit for being. For the past month or two they have been giving their undivided attention to building hotels, and the change to the more useful work of building a hospital should be a pleasant one.
