The Feilding Star. SATURDAY, MAY 9, 1891. Wednesday Half-holiday
The subject of the Wednesday halfholiday has again been brought under our notice, and we. are pleased to know that active steps towards the accomplishment of this desirable privilege are likely to be taken at no distant date. As most of our readers are already aware this halfholiday is an accomplished fact in Palmerston, and in Marton very nearly so. As regards the latter place, when we stated' that the cnsfcoiu was established in Marton, we were m error, having been wrongly informed, but we know novy that success is almost assured. The chairman of the Employer's Association in Palmerston North, Mr Wm. Park, has informed us that business men there lose absolutely nothing, either as regards business, or the number of hours of labor given, by their employes, while the latter do their work far more cheerfully, and therefore better, in consequence of the hours, for exercise and relaxation thus afforded them. Of course the young men in the shops work up until ten o'clock on Saturday night, but so they do in Feilding. As regards the provisions of " The Employment of Females and Others Act," any difficulty presented there can be removed by the Borough Council declaring Wednesday instead of Saturday as the day on which the privileges and penalties under the said Act come into force. In the meantime we would suggest that the employes also take action at once.
