We are indebted to the Advocate which published the following figures, received from the census enumerator, who resides at Marton, showing the increase and decrease of the population in the townships named :—
At the outset we desire to congratulate Palmerston on the wonderful progress made by that enterprising borough, which, apart from its advantageous situation, is almost entirely due to the go-ahead character of the people. "Where their common interests were to be served private differences have always been laid 1 aside, and all have worked fait'lfnlly for the desired end. The percentage of increase in Feilding is not what we expected or hoped, but the people are not so much to blame for that, because new settlers have, wisely, preferred to get out on their land in the counir , rather than to build dwellings in the Borough. Still the resi'loni population is not what it should lie, when we consider the importance and prosperity of its surroundings. However, we can see in the near future a change for the better, when the stagnation which lias marked this place will be a thing of the past.
