The Anglo-Portuguese Rupture

The Governor of Mozambique has communicated with the Government concerning the seizure of mails and vessels by ■ the Portuguese authorities in Mashonaland. He declares that the Rhodes Company had broken the recently-arranged-modus vivendi, and therefore the Portuguese had done the same. He mentions* that several Englishmen ha. ye been taken» prisoners ; also that a tug belonging- to» Mr Johnston, the British Agent in th©' Zambesi, had been seized and the English ensign lowered. He declares that hereafter only vessels flying the Portugueseflag will be allowed on the Pungwe River,, which leads into the terrifcoryclaimed by the British South Africa Company; Capetown. April 21. Owing to the action of tha Portuguesejuthorities, martial law has been pro--slaimed in Mashonaland. London, April 22. The English press are unanimous inShe opinion that a lesson should be taught Portugal for its action in Mashonalarid. The Daily Telegraph insists that it is she duty of the Marquis of Salisbury to i" send the British fleet to. Lisbon to demand satisfaction. :':.-. The Government of Capetown has forsvardeda protest against the inaction of ;he Imperial Government with regard to Portuguese action in Mashonaland. The Marquis of Salisbury has demanded from the Portuguese Government mi explanation of the event, and should it - 3e unsatisfactory, will insist on reparatibri.
