The "usual .''monthly. V- meeting wns held in the Board's office on Saturday 18th inst: Present — Messrs T. R. Taylor 'VVilliaiiisoj}, Lucas, Mills, '■fiayfchorne, '-Horne/Holden and Reid. The minutes of the ; last meeting were read; and confirmed. ,-,.'■ ;; ■:■ ;: CORRESPONDENCE. From Treasury Office, re outstanding debentures under "The Roads and Bridges Construction Act, 1882." converted into 5 per cent debentures under section 27, of" The Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886," the present value of the 7 debentures mentioned is £'1904 7s <jd and the Board will be liable to pay 5 per cent interest; viz., £95 4s Id per annum for 28 years, the principal sum being paid hy .Government. The interest payable 'half-yearly, on the . Ist February and Ist August in each ' year, the first half-yearly pay ment of £47 12s Id being due on the; Ist August next. Proposed by/ Mr Haythorne, seconded $y Mr Williamson/ as an amendment, 'That only one rate be collected in the !Kimbolton Ward. Mr Taylor . tbpaght the . Kimbplton Ward, /being in such a good position •ought to be \yilling to bear their equal share with the other wards. Mr -Williamson suggested that a legal -opinion be procured as to whether a separate ward account should be kept or only a general account. Mr Reid thought if the Act relating to cthis matter was read it could easily be Tunderstpod by the members. Mr Williamsph- thought, as , last year's Tates were not all in yet the motion might 3>e left over. Mr Taylor thought it is the duty pf one -\yard to assist, the others. . Mr Lucas said that the rate ought to be struck at the proper, time. r Mr Haythorne ' remarked that a large *monnt of interest was 'lost owing to rates being allowed: to get behind. The Clerk said the rates must he the the same all over the 'district. Mr Haythorne contended that the ratepayers of his ward were entitled to some abatement as regards their rates. Ultimately the motion and amendment •were held over, and the following resolution" was proposed by M* Williamson, and. seconded by /.-Mr, Taylor:— That a legal opinion be obtained before next meeting as to the legality of keeping ward ; also if each ward can strike a separate rate suitable to itself. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Homer, ■ seconded by Mr Reid that the balance of thirds after .giving Mr Cpssy an outlet be spent according to the petitiou of Wishaw and others. — Carried. , . Proposed by' Mr Keid, seconded by Mr Homer, That the name of Thomas Stent in place of Jane Lumsden, and also George Cole, be put on the roll in "place of James Reid as owners of sections 21 and 18 reßpectively.- — Carried. Proposed by Mr Holden, seconled by Mr Lucas, That permission be given to Messrs Mowlera and Arbor, to fell bush on the Board's usual terms, to be paid when the Board is in funds, and passed by the Engineer. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Williamson, seconded Mr Taylor, That the Clerk write to the Commissioner of Lands asking if the reserves in the Kiwitea Road District have been gazetted and where the re- • serves are vested. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Lucas, seconded by Mr Holden, That the Secretary write tc Horowhenna County Council stating thai this Board is willing to co-operate with them re the Native rates, and also tc write to Mr Macarthur drawing his atten tion to this matter.— Carried. Proposed by Mr Mills, seconded bj Mr Lucas, That the Engineer call foi tenders for delivering 200 yards of ineta] to be put on the Kimbol ton Road, in the Makino Ward, . where necessary, and tc replace four old culverts with pipes. — Carried. Mr Harrison here waited on the Boarc and stated that his land in the Harboui Board Block was being rated at £2 pc: acre whilst other settlers' lands was onl] rated at £1. ■ It was here suggested that owing to I the -'discrepancy in 'the amount, of the tenders offerer for thu various contracts before, the JJnurd, that in future the Engineer state the different quantifies of material required in the various works to bo done. Proposed by Mr Homer, seconder! by Mr Haythorne, That the tender of J. A. McDonald- for contracts 3, 5, and 6, at £495 15-s Od ; and that of Shapeleski and Ueurke for Nds. 9 and 10, at £298 and £235 respectively be accepterl, providingthe sureties .sign, if not the next- lowest tender. - Carried. A conversation, then took place in regurd'to the losses sustained by workmen who had beeu employed by a ceruin de faulting contractor, it was. unanimously decided that the Board could not accept any responsibility in regard to these cases. The usual accounts were passed for payment and the meeting then adjourned.
