Freetrade " How Freetrade Affects the Victorian Fanner" was the subject of a lecture delivered in the Melbourne Coffee Palace last night by Mr Samuel Rinder, of Wedderburn, under the auspices of the Freetrade Democratic Association. Mr R. M. Smith presided at the meeting; and there was a large attendance of members and their friends. Mr Rinder said that protection increased the cost of everything the farmers had to buy, and decreased the value of everything they hud to sell. They were learning- that apart from the increased cost of implements, protection meant a reduction in the value of their products by increasing the cost of export ■ing the surplus. In his own district the young men were in fayour of freetrade, because they saw that protection could not benefit them ; and, on the whole, Mr Smder thought that the day was breaking: at last. In a discussion which followed, several speakers gave encouraging accounts of the spread of freetrade opinions among the farmers of the colony. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Rinder for his paper. — Argus. Cobbe & Darragh are now opening up their stock of Autumn and Winter Goods. — Advt.
