Case of Dummyism

W rllington, diVl arch 20 Evidence was given in the dummyisitf case this afternoon, on behalf of the prosecution, by Rachael Joseph, Rose Joseph, Jane Samuel, Heuchen Samuel r and E. K. Samuel, who stated that I tbey signed certain applications for land in the Wairarapa District at the request of Mr Samuel, private secretary for Mr ' Jacob Joseph. Tbey did not examine the contents of the documents before affixing their signatures, and they were not aware of the responsibility attaching to them. These witnesses refused to answer certain questions with reference to signing the applications, on the ground that in during so they might criminate themselves, but the Magistrate ruled that the questions must be answered, and the witnesses submitted to this ruling, and forthwith gave replies to all questions put to them. A clerk in the Colonial Bank, Wellington, proved that the firm of Joseph and Phillips bad an an account at tbe bank, and produced certain cheques made out by the defendant in favour of the Receiver of Land Revenue at Wellington. The case was adjourned till Tuesday next.
