St.- Patrick's Day Sports
The Athletic Sports held at Ashurst on Tuesday last under the combined auspices of. the Foresters and Knights of Labor were well attended, some 300 to 400 per sons being on the ground. The eyents o 1 the whole were well contested, and there was some yery good jumping, walking and running. Mr T. Sexton jicoed as starter, and Mr H. W. Haybittle as timekeeper, while Mr J. S. Freeman performed the duties of secretary in a very efficient and courteous manner. The Ashurst Band lent life to the proceedings by playing at frequent intervals in a style that did them much credit. The following are the results of the different events : Girls' Race, 100 yds. —L. Freeman, 1 ; A. Shannessy, 2 ; M. Read, 3. , • Foresters' Handicap, 200yias. — J. Bush, 1; W. Hart, 2. St. Patrick's Handicap, 100 yds, run in three heats. Final heat— <T. Munro, 1 ; H. S. Running High Jump.— Moyes, sft, 1 ; Thacker, 4ft llin, 2 ; Munro, 4ft lOin, 3. • St.- Patrick's Handicap, 220 yds. —By a singular coincidence each' of t the three heats, resulted exactly as , in the 100 yds handicap. Munro, 1 ; Taylor, 2; Potts, 3. Mile Running Handicap.— Maunder, 1; Cavanagh, 2 ; Mooney, 3. Veteran's Race, 100yds.— This resulted in a .dead heat between T. Sexton and S. Ingram. Walking — McNiven, 1; Follett, 2. 220 Yards— Atkins, 1; "Watts, 2. 440 : Yards— Thorns, 1 ; McAlley, 2. One Mile— Boss, 1 ; Chubbin, 2. 220 Hurdles — Watts, 1 ; H. Cameron, 2; C. .McDonell, 3. Yaultin^— McDon-. ell, 1 ; Green, 2. Cup Race — Dalziell, 1; Norton, 2. Only a moderate attendance were present.
About 1000 persons were present at the Palmerston Sports on Tuesday, when the principal events resulted as follows : — St. Patrick's Handicap. — Ist event, 100 .yds: G. Newth 1, Oliphant 2; 220 yds : Oliphant 1, E. Newth 2; 440 yds: Oliphant 1, Foreman 2 ; 880 yd s: Foreman 1, "Wallace 2; Oliphant thus won the aggregate prize, with Foreman second. Troy won the high jump, and Pleasants and Bailey tied at 41ft at the hop, step and jump. One Mile Walk— W. Collingwood, 1 ; Slade, 2. One Mile Rim— F. Wyeth, 1 ; Whiteman, 2. 220 Hurdles —Oliphant, 1; Palmer. 2; Bailey, 3. National Race— McGuinness, 1 ; Troy, 2.
