Accidents and Fatalities
(per united press association.) Uhbistchxtbch, March 17. Mr J. B. Gresson, solicitor, of Chnstchurch, son of the late Mr Justice Gresson, met with a serious accident near Southbrook this morning. He was seated on the platform of a carriage of the north train with his face to the engine, and was suddenly observed to fall. The tram pulled up a few chains further on, and some of the passengers went back to his assistance. Gresson was found lying insensible on the metals, and it was found that the wheels of one carriage and the guard's yan had passed over his shoulder. Later. Mr Gresson succumbed to his injuries at 12.30 p.m. Auckland, March 17. John Hopper, aged 76, dropped dead last evening in the garden of his residence, Essex street, while talking with his wife. Heart disease is supposed to be the cause. James Bray, of Mount Eden, is reported as missing at Helens ville, and is supposed to be drowned, as a splash was heard in the river last night, and some one called, " Oh, my God ! " Wellington, This Day. A fatal accident occurred at Cable's Lion Foundry this morning. John W. McKenzie, Engineer and Foreman of Works, was overhead engaged in shifting the travelling crane whe.n he missed his footing. In his descent he caught hold of a driving rope, and was dashed against the wall of the office. He was picked up unconscious, and sent to the Hospital, where he expired. The base of the skull was fractured. McKenzie was married with a wife and five children. : Waipawa, This Day. A man named W. Coles was found dead near Wanstead. At the inquest a verdict of died from excessive drinking and exposure was returned.
