Football
Notes by ■'-" Off-side." A football practice was held on tbe Oval on Saturday afternoon last, when there was a fair muster ; several of the seniors, however, did not roll up. Among those present I noticed: AVhisker (3), Giesen (2), Strachan, R. Parr, Stewart and several players from Awahuri. It was a good practice, considering it was • the second meeting of the season. The seniors will have to attend practice better if they hope to hold their own during .the coming season, the first match of which, I hear, is to be played on Saturday the ' 28th inst. " One objectionable feature I would like to point out is • tbe tendency of a few of ofthe players to talk rather much, and to give opinions before they are asked for, ' perhaps this was owing to the absence of umpires on this occasion. I think it is the duty of the seniors to suppress talkativeness'on the part of the juniors, as well as to set- a good -example by keeping quiet themselves. 1 see the committee of the Football dub are rather dilatory in getting the ground in order ; the goal posts are up at ' one end of the field only and the touchlines have not yet been made, which was a great draw-back on Saturday. As a meeting of those interested in foothall is to be held to-morrow night, I would suggest that some means be taken into consideration for preventing the flob-l- - water from the Lawn coming down ( n the lower part of the field. A small drain - close td the fence would carry away most of the water.
