On Sunday three young men n — Alfred Chapman, Wilhan Helsop and Henry Helsop— set out in an open boat from Melville Bay, Coromandel, intending to go to Sandy Bay. When not far ■ from their destination the boat capsized in the rough sea. Chapman being a fair swimmer, struck out for the shore, which ' he reached with difficulty, being' badly ' hurt on the rocks. The two Helsops clung to the boat, but Henry, who was only 16 years of age, was washed off and drowned. A settler named Browlaud put out in a boat, by which means the elder brother was rescued from his perilous position. The body of Gordon Hall/drowned m the Panui boat accident, has been recovered. Ashburton, February 25. In a farm kitchen at Dhertsey, Ashburton _ County, a young fellow named Smith jumped leap-frog fashion on to the back of another young fellow, named Shepherd, while the latter was sitting on a bench. The jerk broke Shepherd's spinal cord, and his death is looked upon as iueyitable, but he is still alive. Westport, February 24. A boy eight years old named Patrick Kane, son of a miner, wss drowned at Addison's Flat this afternoon while bathing in a dam. Several boys about the same age as deceased were present, but were unable to rescue him. An inquest is to be held to-morrow.
