Scene in a Police Court
SIR WILLIAM FOX ACCUSED OF PARTIALITY. (PEE PEESS ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, February 25An unusual scene occurred at the Police Court, to-day. Mr Cotter, who appeared on behalf of William Lynch, licensee of the Clarendon Hotel, in a case in which the latter was charged with selling liquor after hours, asked for an adjournment, contending that the expressions . that Sir William Fox^ one ot the Magistrates, had frequently given utterance to regarding the liquor traffic, led the defendant to feel that in this case he would n')t receive a fair hearing. An animated discussion took place.- Sir William Fox said he would hear the case, and remarked that if there was any force in what Mr Cotter had v said he should apply to the Government to strike him off the rolls as not being qualified to sit. The case was then proceeded with, but was dismissed on a technical ground the bench leaving it to the pro* seeution to commence- denovo.
