Over the Gorge
.». . A man named Charles Smith met with a' very serious accident while riding through ,the jGorge yesterday afternoon. Rounding a, point he suddenly met the Palmerston - Woodville ■ each, and was unable to avoid it. The coach struck the hind- quarters of the horse, and horse and rider were precipitated over the gorge, and fell to the river bed, a distance of 60 : feet below, the horse rolling over Smith. The horse was badly injured, and Smith miraculously escaped with his life. He was conveyed. by trap to Palmerston to the Club Hotel, and. examined by Dr Mach t.re, who found that' he was very severely shaken but had sustained no serious injury. — Manawafcu Times.
