Tlie Defence Coiumi.snion recommended that a mobile force of 12,000 rank and file, partial ly paid militia and infantry, will be necessary for the peace establishment of such an immense territory as Australia, This force should be divided into 24 battalions of 500 each. It is suggested that New South Wales and Victoria should supply eight each, and South Australia and .Queensland four each. The two first named colonies are also to furnish four batteries of field artillery and two regiments of mounted mfaDtry each; S-nth Australia and Queensland two- batteries and one regiment each. . '
