The total quantity of wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom is 2,041,000 quarters; for the Continent, 714,000 quarters. The wool market is buoyant, and generally 5 per cent, above the I>eceinclosing rates. Good lambs' wool is firm, and faulty sorts £d lower. Foreigners are making large purchases. The American visible wheat supply is 44,200.000 bushels. The failure of the South Australian loan is attributed to the high pretniuin at which the. loan- was fixed, when the advisers suggested that the minimum should be 97.The opinion is generally expressed in the city- that it will be madness on the part of other colonies to think of borrowing at present; unless they are' prepared .to' place a loan at a lower minimum than 98. In the House of .Commons to-day Mr Gladstone's .Religious Disabilities Kemoval Bill was rejected on a division by 256, to 123. In moving the measure Mr Gladstone contended that the present disabilities* under which Catholics suffered were unfair, since their loyalty had been proved to be untainted. Mr Smith, speaking on behalf of the Government, who opposed the Bill, said there was no necessity for the - Bill, and the present time was inopportune, as the mass of British. subjects regarded the pro- ' posed change with alarm. -February. 5.
