Tidings of the Kakanui
PROBABLE LOSS OF THE VESSEL. I PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION. I Bluff, February 4. Arrived— Hinemoa, from Macquarries Island, at 6 p.m, She reports that the Kakanui arrived there on the 2nd of 5 January, and left again on : the 3rd, tak- 1 ing away eight men from the island, and leaving Mr Mellish, the manager, and his j wife there. Two days after the Kakanui 1 left .the Macquarries a fearful westerly ] gale was experienced there, and it is most ] probable that the Kakanui foundered in i that gale. The people on the Macquarries ] had plenty of food. A thorough search ( has be'en made of the Auckland, Snares, ] Solanders, Traps, and all outlying islands, 1 but no trace of anyone has been found. Dunedin, Febru iry 4. So far as can be ascertained the names of those ou .board the Kakanui are— Captain William Best, married, with 4 - children; Captain Jacob Eckuff, mate, married, with 6 or 7 children ; Morris Ericson, mate, married ; Robert Stewart, engineer, married, 1 child ; William Morgan, fireman, married, 4 children ; William Rensler, cook and steward, married ; George Ludwig, seaman, married, 2 children ; Charles Silvester, another seaman, whose name is unknown, and a fireman, also unknown ; and James Stewart, Customs officer, son of Captain J. Stewaet, of Big Dredge. The eight men taken off the Island were— C. Gamble, H. Couz^ns, A. Watson.'G. Godfrey, W. Oow, H. Lewis, and two lads named W. Cowan, and W. Ralph. Couzens and Dow are Dunedin men, aed Lewis was a fisherman at Port .Chalmers. The Hinemoa news has cast quite a ; gloom over the place. This Day. The Kakanui was insured for i>lsoo in Home offices and ; .£3oo in the National. She was valued between ;£2500 and The second mate's name was Norden, not Ereckson ; he is married and ' has one child ; Kessler is married and has one child ; Morgan has five children, all very young ; an able seaman named Ludwig, not Lubeck, of Silvester, single, has no relatives in this part of the colony ; a seaman shipped at the last minute named Tone, Christian name unknown, belongs to Dunedin, and is married with one child ; a fireman was picked up at the last moment, name unknown. Invercabgill, February 4. Alex. Watson, the only man from this quarter on board the missing steamer ■ Kakanui, has his wife here. He was second mate of the Circe, and afterwards mate, of Mr Hatch's schooner Awarua, out joined th« shore party in March last. The probability of so many lives being sacrificed for what proves an unfounded rumour that the people on the Macquarries were starving has caused a fear- , ful sensation here.
