The rebels jit^P'porto failed to capture the telegrapJiJOo'ffice but succeeded in seizing the town -Hall, which was immediately bombarded by.Loyalists. Owing to want ofiaMPtUiUtion ..the rebels had to surrender.*, Fifty persons altogether were killed. The .country is tranquil. .HVLIj? Lisbon, January 2. The OportohTrebels numbered 600, chiefly infantry,? headed by their own officers. They broke out from their barracks at four in the morning, and marched to the police and telegraph offices. The Municipal Guard of cavalry and the infantry who remained loyal, intercepted them, whereupon they retreated to the Town Hall and nominated a [Republican directorate. Desultory fighting went on till 2 p.m., when the Town Hall was captured at the point of the bayonet, when 300 soldiers and civilians were arrested. Twenty were killed and 60 wounded. The rebels relied on support from all parts of the country, but did not receive it.
