The Opposition
TnE members of the Opposition having met in solemn caucus on Monday night appointed Meesrs Rolleston and Bryce as their leaders ''with power to add to their number." Capt. Russell and Messrs Macarthur and Scobie McKenzie have been appointed to act with them. The leadership, says the N.Z. Times, is thus for the present in the hands of a committee of five. It is a transition state, which will end probably when the House meets to hear the Government policy after the recess. We believe that a good choice has been made in these gentlemen, with perhaps the exception of Mr Scobie Mackenzie, whose notorious flightiness will always be a cause of anxiety to his friends and delight to his enemies. Capt. Russell will be a fit antagonist for his old adversary the Hdn. Mr Seddon, while Mr Macarthur will have some enjoyable moments in bowling over the figures of the Hon. Mr Ballance. There can be no question that taking them as a whole, a better selection could hardly have been made. The knowledge that five such watchful foes are on the alert to take advantage of their slightest error in tactics, will h;ive the effect of consolidating the forces of the Ministry, and thus giving the Cabinet a chance of showing tfieir real capacity to administer the affairs of the country.
