-». In-.the course of a very few years it will be a pleasant carriage drive from Feilding to Napier. There was a steady downfall ,of rain all over this district yesterday. . Walter Lukeman was found suffocated to death in an hotel garden at Cambridge, Auckland. A verdict of accidental death was returned. An old man named Robert Fraser was found dead in his house, afc the Bluff, on Sunday afternoon. Death evidently resulting rrom apoplexy. He was a single man. Mr William Barfclett, coach proprietor, fell off his brake, atHawera, on Saturday last, and was killed, the wheel passing over his head. He was an old settler, about 65' years of .age. The following articles are now lying unclaimed at the Star office : — One pair children's boots (new), one syringe, one satchell, three axle caps, one knee pad for lady's saddle, one man's shirt and handkerchief (new). The settlers on the Wellington-Mana-watu Railway line, and Wellington consignees, are complaining that the exorbitant charges made for hauling produce makes it impossible for farmers on the line to compete with the South Island farmers. Watts, of Wellington, and formerly of Feilding, won the 100, 120, 150 and 220 yards races at the Greyto wn Sports on Anniversary Day, while Arnott (another Feilding lad), winner of the Wellington Caledonian Society's Handicap a few days ago, palled over the two hurdle races (100 and 220 yards). Paul Bryant, boatswain of the ship Albuera, was killed at Lyttelton on Sunday last, by falling off fcbe platform of the train for Christchurch just as it was entering the tunnel at 1.40 p.m. The tram did not pass over him, but ho is supposed to have struck his chest against the points. He was alive, but. speechless, when picked Up, and died in 15. : minutes. At Ourn Bay, Auckland, a fortnight ago a yacht was struck by lightning. A large hole was made in her side, one of the wire rope stays was completely melted away, and the chain plates parti v fussed, arid. the bolts drawn. This is said to be the first time an accident of the kind lias been heard of in the Manukau Harbor.

At a meeting of the Government party ' yesterday, Mr W. C. Smith, member for, Wavpawa, was selected for the post of Chairman of Committees by a large, majority. Mr G. Grant, of Sandon, occupied the.pulpit at the Wesleyan Church last Sun. day morning, and preached a most eloquent sermon. At the half-yearly meeting of the Wanganui district of the 1.0.0. F., M.U., held at the Palmerston Oddfellows' lodge-room on Friday evening last, District Grand Master Bro. E. Nix, on retiring from the chair, was presented with a pair of emblems of the Order for- the efficient manner in which he had performed the duties of his office. Show " special trains will run from the north of Wangauui on Thursday and Friday mornings to enable the public from Hawera and other stations to attend each day." Why not extend this invitation to the people down this way ? To test the question whether freezing in j u res butter, two boxes were obtained by Mr Murphy, Secretary of the Canterbury A. and P. A contemporary sajs that in a household in Canterbury one of the servants asked her mistress for the loan of the., newspaper for a short time, as the cook's brother had been elected to Parliament, and she wished to see the returns of the election. We (Dunedin Star) certainly can cap that story, A domestic inquired of her mistress on the morning of December 6 if the master of the house was a 'Hansard ' man, and, receiving an affirmative reply, said : " That is nice. Ho'll report my uncle now." Our readers will observe by our adver tising columns that the Midgets and Can* aria Combination Company propose playing here on Friday and Saturday, the 30th and 31st insts.
