Opening of Parliament

[PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION. | Wellington, January 23. Parliament vras opened at 2 30 hy Sir Frederick Whitaker, Maj.tr Baillie, and the lion. Mr Stevens, Coin uiissioners. Sir Harry Atkinson was nut present. ■Thsre wtre 16 members of the Council and 54 of the House present. Sir Frederick Whitaker read the Commission. After the formal ceremony, Sir Harry Atkinson was introduced, and, taking his seat as Speaker of the Council, swore in Messrs Orinond and Johnston, and announced the other four appointments. It was announced that the Governor would attend the Council in person at 2.30 on Tuesday, and explain the reason why Parliament was called together. A deputation of nine members waited on tb,e .Governor this morning and presented a petition signed by 40 members against the appointments to the Legislative Council. The Governor said a despatch would be laid on the table of the House in due course, &ad he must refer them to it for the views he entertained on the subject.
