The Feilding Star. TUESDAY, JAN. 20, 1891.

The Kiwitea Road Board At the .meeting of the Kiwitea Road , Board on Saturday last the amount, of real progressive work done was considerable. A contract was let for forming nearly six .miles of the Kimbolton road beyond the rising settle- l . ment of Birmingham, tend- other contracts, 'for forming and trimming Williamson's road East and West, ' and re-grading some of the cuttings on Mackay's Line, were also disposed of, while the work on the Middle* JEtoad, for which fresh tenders had' been .called owing r to the previous tenders being too high, has now been let at a reasonable figure. In the aggregate these will amount to a very ' large sum of money, every penny of which will, however, be spent to the best advantage for the present ratepayers and future settlers. We are not sure that the whole of the ratepayers in the Road District will agree with the motion which was ; carried by Mr Eeid, the Warden for the Hautapu. It certainly appears that this early action in obtaining the sanction of the Board, to raise a loan of £4000 for 1892 is premature. Admitting that Mr Reid nray have good . reasons for the step he has taken, in our opinion it would have been better for him to have given notice of motion in order that the whole of the members of the Board might have been present to take part in the discussion, also that the . ratepayers in the other wards interested might have had the opportunity given them of considering the question. It will be seen by the resolution, .which appears in our report elsewhere, that it is hardly precise enough, aud is therefore capable of bearing rather a different interpretation to what N the mover intended. It is to' be understood that we do not condemn the intention of the resolution, because, in itself it is highly, commendable, evincing as it does a strong determination to push on roadinakiug to the utmoßt extent of the borrowing powers of the Board. Still w$ do think. the resolution would have lost none of its force had it been mote carefully prepared, its intentions formulated iv clearer knd more concise language, and only adopted after mature and calm deliberation.
