The Revenue
We have reason to believe that there will be a largo surplus for the current financial year. Besides the savings made in expenditure by the Ministry, there is a prospect of a larg-e increase in the revenue being shown. This will be somewhat of a contrast to the the financial condition of the colony when Sir Harry Atkin«ou took office in 1887. It is doubly satisfactory, seeing that general taxation has been reduced £55,000 by the abolition of the Primage Duty.
The Eesident Magistrate's Court yesterday sat from 10 a.m. until about 10 p.m., with two short intervals for lunch and dinner. There wa« some remarkable evidence given in the course of hearing some of the ea«es, but as it ia highly probable one of them will come under .review in another place, we forbear from, comment at present. Several ot'th« cases put down for hearing were held over. Some of tkeae will be disposed of at » sitting »f Jtutices to be held next week, while others were adjourned until the regular sitting of the Court in Feildiug.
