TO.THB EDITOR OF TH f- STAR. Sie — Considerable di^ ifctsfaction seems to be uii-nife ;ted by the set es in tie West W.:it»ipu at the action oi" the Kiwitea Road Board in selling the right to cut> grass seed in front of their respective sac- i tions, to an outsider. It appears to me ( that it would have been equitable on the ] part of the Board to have given the settlers in the district an opportunity to j make nn offer for the right of cutting the , grass as they (the settlers) =kept their t stock off the roads — which is not the usual custom in newly-settled districts — so shat they might cut the grass for seed for their own use. All the settlers, I believe, applied to the Board for the right .to cut the grass in front of their sections along the road. 'Some offered n ' sum of money for the privilege, and others, made a' formal application, but. , were willing to pay any reasonable ] amount for the .privilege if requested to do so. The settlers think, and rightly so ( to, that if the Board wanted to make money out of the grass along the road let them do like the, Railway Department — advertise m the papers for tenders. I think that the " penny wise and pound foolish "- business has been exhibited by the Board in this case, as I understand that the purchaser who paid the Board £3, has sold the privilege again for the sum of _?10. The settlers think that this £8 should have gone into the funds of the Board instead of in the' "pockets of a private individual. — I am, &c., 1 -Wjituna.
