Feilding Star. THURSDAY, JAN. 8, 1891. The Behring Sea Trouble
It is not foz- us to say who is responsible for the exaggerated statements forwarded by the Press Association in connection with the fishery disputes between American and Canadian sealers in the Behring Sea, but we are forced into the opinion that insufficient cai'e has been exercised in examining first into the truth of. " alleged facts" before accepting and disseminating them. .A .few days ago the disquieting intelligence was willed that the British . Ambassador had threatened reprisals if the English sealers were interfered with by American cruisers, and now we are informed that the alleged ultimatum of the British Ambassador was without foundatiou, and the qxiestion will be submitted to arbitration. Then ''treading on the heels" of this comes the news that the Government has decided to reinforce the British squadron in the Behring sea, we suppose because there are to be no reprisals; and the Germans and Russians are also going to send fleets to protect their sealers and resist Americau demands. It will be news co a good many to learn that these latter nation were at all interested in the dispute, and the intelligence as distributed by the Press Association may be taken with a grain of salt.
