Manchester Road Board

Saturday, January 3rd, 1891. The usual meeting of the Board was ield as above. Present — Messrs Lethbridge (chairman), Purkiss, Dowries, JReeves, Wheeler, and W. G. Pearce. ; The minutes of the previous meeting "were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. From M. Enright, Ashurst. calling attention to the state of his section on the IFeilding- Ashurst road, which is always in a state of flood in wet weather caused by «he made drain through another adjoining property, and threatening: an action for damages. From John J. Hook, offering 30s foi permission to cut grass on the Valley road. From Schmidt and Co., asking for renewal of their slaughter license. From B. L. Lane, asking "VV. Green's name to be put on roll instead of his for section 89, sub-division E, Manchester Block. Proposed by Mr Wheeler, seconded by Mr Purkiss, That William Green's name be inserted upon the roll for section 89, sub.-div. E, in place of Mr B. L. Lane's. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Wheeler, seconded by Mr Downes, That Messi*s Schmidt's application for slaughter license be granted. — Carried, Proposed by Mr Reeve, seconded by Mr Downes, That the offer of J. T. Hook of 30s for grass on Valley and Taonui roads be accepted. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Purkiss, seconded by Mr Reeves, That Mr Reeves and the Engineer inspect the drain complained of by Mr Enright, and report at next meeting of the Board. — Carried. The Chairman introduced the subject of the proposed bridge over the Oroua xiver at Aorangi. The Engineer gave some information on the subject. He spoke in favor of a s.te near the railway bridge, and said he had, from the favorable circumstance of the latter affording a a shorter structure, teen able to reduce the probable cost. A single pier bridge would ba suitable in «very respect. The cost would be about 43000. The chairman said that would cost j?150 a, year divided amony the four Boards. The money would be borrowed under the Government Loans to Local Bodies Act. A general conversrtion ensued. It was generally admitted the bridge would be a great convenience as it shortened the distance to Palmerstou two miles, and to ' Ashurst two miles. Anent the works at the Kiwitea crossing, the Chairman said the protective -works already there were all that would be required. Practically the scheme for expensive protective works had been dropped by the Borough Council. Proposed by Mr Reeve, seconded by Mr Purkiss, That the Chairman be requested to communicate with the other interested local bodies to ascertain what part of the cost of a bridge across the Oroua they are agreeable to become respons.b'a for. Bridge to be adjoining the present railway bridge and to cost about i&000. The Chairman to report at the next meeting of the Board. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Downes, seconded by Mr Reeve, That the tender of EL Behrendt for formation and metalling on McCrea's road, and that of J. Anderson for metalling Mangaone road be accepted. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Wheeler, seconded by Mr Purkiss, That the slaughter license for the current year be one pound sterling, and that Mr Bray be appointed Slaughterhouse Inspector, and that he retain the fees for his tronble, — Carried. Proposed by Mr Wheeler, seconded by Mr Purkirs, That the dog tax for the current year be 2s 6d for sheep and cattle dogs, and the tax for sporting and all other dogs be 108, and that Mr Bray be Registrar of dogs, and the toll-house, Ashurst, be the registering office. — Carried. The usual monthly accounts were passed for payment and the meeting adjourned.
