FEILDING HACK MEETING*

President— F. T. Lethbridge, Eaq, Vice President —D. H. Macarthur, Esq., .VI. H X, JW^-MrD.Downea, Treasurer — M rE, J . Al len. Secretary — Mr VV A. Sandilands Clerk of the Scales— Mr W. G Haybittle. Clerk of the Course Mr R. Roake. Starter — Mr "K. Durie. Timekeeper— M.T H. W. Hayhittle Handicapper — Mr J. E. Henry. Stewards —Messrs H. L> Sherwill, W. A. L. Bailey, J. C Moray, E. Goodbehere, B. Gosling, W. G. Haybittle and J. E. Henry. The inauguration of the new race course took place on Saturday last, the occasion being the Summer Hack Meeting of the Feilding Jockey Club. In the early part of the day the weather wa» everything that could be desired, bat in the afternoon several heavy showers of rain fell, which proved rather a damper and interfered considerably with businessat the machine. The grand stand proved! an undoubted acquisition. The seats* were nearly nil taken up ('here it? sitting room for 400), and the dining-room, bbar:r r : &c, under the management of Mr Gibbons, of Marton, were liberally patronised. The public paddock and saddling: paddock were weir filled, and competent judges estimated the whole attendance* to be upwards of two thousand. The usual race games, viz., sparring booth, doodlum buck, ball, &c, were there in force, except the yenerable Aunt Sally who was conspicious by her absence. There were a few rough and tumble fights, as will invariably be the casewhen a number of men get together, and they become " merry over their cups," but nobody was a bit the worse. Although the stewards had done all that men could. do to get started at the advertised time, yet punctuality seemed impossible. This may in some degree be accounted for by the fact that everything was new— even to the paint on the stand which left its mark on the clothing of a good znauy men— and owners and jock* eys did not do as much as they might have done to expedite matters. However, that is a mere matter of detail, and the experiences gained on Saturday will no doubt prove useful guides at the Easter Meeting. The new course was put to a severe test, and withstood the test well. Everyone was delighted with it, and the heavy rap had not the slight* eat effect, except to make it better for the horses. It is not too much to say that it is now one of the best courses with the best appointments in the colony, and the Feilding Jockey Club deserve the highest praise for their enterprise. A great deal of the present success of the Club is due to the indefatigable Secretary,. Mr Sandi* lands, who has proved himself to be the right man in the right place. Mr Henry, the handicapper, is also to be mentioned because it is owing largely to his professional skill that the Club had such large fields, and close finishes. The starter (Mr Dune), the clerk of scalej* (Mr W. G. Haybittle), the judge (Mr D. Downes), the clerk of course (Mr E. Eoake), and the other officers all worked well and to the satisfaction of the public* There was only one protest, which wa» not upheld. The following are the events and their results : — 1. Handicap Hubw.es, of £30; second horse £5 from the stakes. Distance 2 Miles, over 8 hurdles 3ft 6in high; 31 Mr T Scott's b g Wairua, by Somnus, 4yrs, 9-5 . . (J Cameron) 1 39 Mr E Sutherland's blk g Songster, aged, 9-0 .. . . (Proctor) 2 87 Mr H Pell's b g Commotion, syrs, 9-5 (Owner) S Also started— 84 Whalebone, 12-2 ; 54 Te Ata, 9-12 : 56 Mamne, 9-9. Mamne jumped away with the lead, closely followed by Songster, Whalebone and Te Ata bringing up the rear. At the second hurdle Whalebone came down, and inter* fering with Te Ata, the latter also felL Songster displaced Mamne at the bend, and led his field past the stand, Manine cunning second, and Wairua third. Racing along the back stretch Commotion improved his position, but on turning; into the straight Wairua' s colours were to the fore. The issue henceforth was never in doubt, Wairua winning easily by two lengths, Commotion an indifferent third. Totalisator— 3sl ; dividend. £10 3a. 2. Maiden Hurdles, of £10; distance. 1£ mile, over 5 hurdles 3ft 6in high » 9 Mr D Campion's br g Sidge, aged, 12-0.. .. (J Hathaway) 1 18 Mr A McDougall's eh g Sea King syrs, 11-10 . . This race was a complete boil oyer, as an old stock horse,, which had been ridden a distance of nearly 50 miles on the morning of" the races, won very comfortably. The field kept together for half a mile, when Bidge (nicely ridden by J Hathaway) and SeaKing forged ahead, and were never headed, the latter being beaten by two* lengths. Totalisator — 292 ; dividend,. £28 Bs. 3. Manchester Handicap, of £60,. second horse £10 ' from the stakes j distance, 1$ miles; 41 Mr J Northcote's br m Propellor, 6yrs, 7-3, by Papapa (Price) 1 152 Mr J Green's eh h Bos, syrs, 8-7 by Anteros. . . . From an indifferent start, which was decidedly in favor of Chnstmaß, the latter led about 200 yards, but was soon supplanted by Bos, who had a. decided lead past the stand, with Waltonia lying second, the Others being handy except Christmas, who brought up the rear 50 yards away. Propellor and Christmas made a forward move at the back of the course, and at the bend the former was racing a length away from Bos. Oaklands here flattered bis backers, but he died away again, as also did Waltoma. All the horses were under the whip when the straight was reached,, and an exciting finish resulted in a nose verdict for Propellor, who had a slight lead all up the straight, Oaklands two length* away third A protest against Propellor for crossing Bos was not entertained by the Stewards. At the fall of the flag all got well away with the exception of Strike and Mirima. After a short distance had been traversed Omaha was taken to the front, and main- , tamed her position to : the judge's box. Most of the horses were in a cluster on entering the straight, with Rustic coming "very fast on the outside.
