Our Wellington Letter

(FROM OUE OWN COSJtES^OKDENTv) Wellington. Decem'l«r 18 There has been much weeping an Vraiiia* and KB^hinji of ieeth among: ftanv ««f the habitue* of the " bigge< Wooden building in iheworld," and othe <3overnnient offices who have hid thei holidays •" knocked nnthe head"tbroug Parliament having been called toget&e toext month. Delightful trips up th Wanganui river that have beea talke about, and dreamt abuut for month past 7 contemplated shooting, hunting wnd bathing vi the lieausiful Picto Sounds which have floated before th eyes of more than one of the uafortuo etes who have, until now congratulate! themselves on having a month's leave ii such glorious weather, and the rea 3o]ly times they were going to hare, ar now all 9ent to the four wind-: of heaven ■and curses deep and honest fill the air a <every turn. Many of your readers will be pleasec to hear MrF. de J. Clere, who is wel known in your district, has by his gentle manly demeanour, and business tact sc ingratiated himself into the good feelings •Of the citizens of Wellington that lift has s been requested to stand for a seal in th« "City Council, aod has consented to do so To banquet a man -because he fails t< obtain a seat in Parliament is indeed t novelty, yet that is what some admiier.« of Mr Jellicoe wished done. Several "'*• feelers," in the shape of letters in the daily papers, were put out, stating that it was simply marvellous that a gentleman who had only been a citizen of Welling ton for about four years, should have polled over a thousand votes as a candidate for Parliamentary honour, and then followed an eu ogy of the gentleman in question for his outspokenness on the Education question. It was getting Tather sickening; when fortunately a "*' Wag" came to the rescue, and con* gratulaled Mr Jellicbes admirers on their •genius, and followed this up by suggesting that Mr Winter (another defeated candidate) should also be banqueted- as it was astonishing that a man who had only been a citizen, of Wellington for four or five months should poll within 2000 votes of the higest candidate Fortunately this " shot" took effect and the proposed farce died a natural death. . When those terrible "husband beaters" first came into fashion among the ladies great was tbe speculation as to the object of the "gum tree" handle, end numorous were, the sketches giv>*<i as the correct way of carrying the '** beater." One lady in Wellington evidently thinks that they are correctly named, and a day for two ago she astonished the passers by in Manners Street, by turning upon a man who bad been indulging " not wisely but too well," and who attempted to embrace the lady, and belabored the fellow soundly with ber " defender" until a policeman hove in sight, when the amorous individual was marched off looking very crestfellen. It is said that " husband beaters" are in great demand now. Christmas comes but once a year. " the good old festive time," and for that reason it beioves all; who are in a position lo do so, to remember the poor. One of -our fellow citizens, Mr E. Barber, has taken the lead in this matter, and has •offered to give a good Christmas joint to *ach of the poor, and needy who brings «, letter from the 1 , Benevolent Society stating that their cas« is a genuine one. Let us hope that many others will follow Vl r Barber's noble example, and help to I make the J lot of the unfortunate less burdensome at this time of rejoicing
