Correspondence.

ROAD CONTRACTING. TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR. Sir,— Seeing by your paper of the 18th instant a letter signed by Mr W. E. Chamberlain, in which he says a man can shift from 50 to 60 yards of soil on road formation per day. lam sure there are a number of contractors who would like to secure the services of such men and pay them at least three times the ordinary wages; but, I am afraid, Mr Chamberlain's " well known contractor '* is not quite as reliable as he imagines him to be, when he calculates 38yds 14ft at 6d per yard totals 10s lld. Calculations of that description on a large contract would make him a successful tenderer, but'by no means a successful contractor.— l am, &c.-, Contractor. Palmerston, December 19, 1800.
