Present— Mr F. Y. Lethbridge (Mayor), Cra Hajbittle, J. C. Thompson, Watts, T. R. Chamberlain, Sandilands r Rutherford and Goodbehere, The Mayor explained the business of the meetings but aasnch stroiigo^pSsSioli bad been shown to the project he thought it would be advisable to allow the diviation scheme to drop. --The deputation, confflsting"of*M«sSr& P. Thompson, Oarr, W. D. Nicholas^ and H. Worsfold, which was appointed at thereceut public meeting of burgesses tier protest against the proposed work, here* waited on the Council. Mr P. Thompson presented the petition^ signed by about 8(> ratepayers, which was adyerse to blocking the inain_ thoroughfare He said the deputation/'.did not want to dictate to the Counoxf, v but just desired to express their opinion' against the scheme. If . it was carnei into' effect it would, be ihcpnremept tothe public, and he hoped the Council would not proceed with' the proposal^ i, Ct J. . 0. Thompson desired to obtain an opinion from the deputation as to whether they were favorable 'to any ornamentation work i in connection witb the Square, but was ruled out of order* He was about to propose, a motion that no further steps be taken with referenceto the scheme, when Gr Sandiland* informed him that as he was the originator of the motion the Council, was, called to> confirm, he should either propose it, or let it go by default. , . This plan was, acted upon and the proposal jthus fell .through. ,■ The deputation then withdrew. Qnly one tender . was^: received for the position of Borough yaluer, viz., Mr GC. Hill, at $23 jper annum , _, And it was proposed by, Cr J. C Thompson, seconded by Cr> Warts, That Mr (j-.C-. Hill's tender .be accepted, and that he be appointed valuer ;to Ihe Borough for, tlie ensuing year, , ,Cr Goodbehere called . tHe ; pputncil'» " attehj'io ' o the fact, that at "present' therewas oue member too many in the Council, and he considered that the. recent election; f pr a Conj)cii^>r on account, oi Cf flaybittlebeing promoted; to the Mayoralty 'was illegal. The' retiring Maydr ; held office till next Wednesday,, and therefore: Cr' Hay bittle's, seat was not yapant till that date; yet the latter position had been filled . a week ago^ a Councillor ■ baying been' declared duly elected by the* Returning Officer.
