' CORRESPONDENCES From the Postmaster-General, stating: .that the erection of a new Post Office would receive favorable consideration when the Estimates were being prepared next year ; but in the present state of thefinances of the colony it was not likely any vote could be given. From tbe Captain of the Feilding Fire Brigade, stating that an extension of time for payment of subsidies on the enginecould not be obtained, and asking Council for the donation which was promised. From Secretary Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, Wanganui, re election' for members to the Board. Telegram from Government, asking for i concurrence pf the Feilding Council ta Dr Moncktou's candidature to H. and C A. Board From Clerk of Works, report on public* works in Borough. In connection with the nuisance com* plained of by T. Price's executors in Fergußson street, the Pubhc Works Committee's report recommended that the Government be requested to construct an open box drain across the lower end of the Police Station section, and also that the same request be sent Jo the late T. Price's executors to r do similar work on section occupied by Mr Donnelly. A petition from Messrs S. Daw, C» Green, A. McKenzie, W. Beid and G, Wickham was read, requesting something be done to Palmer's road towards remedying the existing inconvenience to th* settlers. : From James Norman, asking for a> cheque for-ioi for rent, owing to hift name being drawn as a defaulter in rates. The report of the Finance Committee recommended accounts for i!55 18s 6d for pavment. , In answer to Cr Goodbehere, the Town Clerk said that the Government were willing to construct the drain, referred to in the Public Works Committee's report. Proposed by Cr Sandilands, seconded by Cr Kutherford, That the reports of the Finance and Public Works Committees be adopted.-T-Carried. Cr Haybittle said that Mr Norman had interviewed him in reference to his claim, and stated that the Town Clerk had informed him (Mr Norman) the rent waa paid in advance for the right-of-way which he allowed the Council to use. Mr Norman denied this assertion. Cr Sandilands considered the Council should purchase the piece of the section used for the road. Proposed by Cr Goodbehere, seconded, by Cr Rutherford, That the account of Air Norman for rent of land used as road at the Kiwitea be passed for payment. — Carried. Cr Rutherford brought forward the question of whether bye-laws should not be complied with in connection with re- - quest from the ratepayers on Palmer'* road, it being not presented by a.Councillor. A conversational discussion ensued oa this point, some of .the Councillors being of opinion that it was Bimply a letter and not a petition. A motion was proposed by Cr Sandilands, which Cr Goodbehere said hewould support if a clause was inserted bo the settlers would see that the Council entertained their request.* This wasagreed to, and it was Proposed by Cr Sandilands, seconded by Cr T. K. Chamberlain, That the appli- « cation of Mr S. Daw and others for works to be performed on Palmer's road,, be held over until next meeting, and in the mean time the Pubhc Works Committee inspect and report. —Carried. FIEE BRIGADE ENGINE. On Captain Bray's request re fire . engine being considered, Mr J. C. Thompson thought that the money should be* paid by the Council, as the. engine was a source of great benefit to the Borough,, and it would be a disgrace if the engine was lost. , Proposed by Cr J, C. Thompson, seconded by Or Goodbehere pro forma, That the sum of £25 towards the payment of an instalment now due on the Fire Brigade.engine be paid to the Captain as per his request, provided that satisfactory arrangements as to future payments eaa be made. The chairman, in speaking to the motion, said the Council should be careful in the manner they disposed of the Borough funds. He might state-that he had interviewed the agent of the proprietors of the engine at Wellington last Saturday, who seemed quite -cool- on the matter. The speaker thought -by the tone of the agent's remarks he would liketo have the instalment due paid—viz, j£'so —and in a short tim^, when another payment falls due, have the same hold on the engine as at present, being able to> take possession of it. Besides, what security had the Council for advancing the money? Suppose they'do advance this amount, then.in another few weeks the agent demands the third instalment,, and the Brigade not being able to fulfil the agreement loses the engine. In reply to Cr Watts,* the chairman stated the terms on which the Council undertook to assist the Brigade,.and said that the engine being only second-hand now, perhaps it would not pay the com* pany to take it away. As only:£47 had. been paid on it, if another £5Q were voted it would be worth the while of theCompany to foreclose then. It was & certainty that the Brigade could not meet the third. payment, which will be due shortly, in terms of the agreement.' Cr J. C, Thompson was much struck by what he had heard since he proposed his motion. He agreed with Cr Haybittle in what he had said, biit would like to* know how the Fire Brigade account stood in connection with the engine, as he was not present when the deputation from the* Fire Brigade waited on: the Council(After an amendment had been proposed by Cr Sandilands, Cr J. C. Thompson wanted to withdraw bis motion, but Cr Goodbehere and others objected.) Cr Watts opposed the scheme, and cited his reasons for so doing. Cr Goodbehere thought that the Council ought to write direct to the agent, and^ see what he was'willing to do. It wouldf be a thousand pities to loose the engine* but as the Brigade seemed-so unconcerned and easy-like in the matter, they did not deserve much encouragementIf the Council eould have afforded it to would have liked *to have seen the fira engine in their own hands. He suggested, affixing the last clause in the njotion— "provided that satisfactory arrangements, &c." —which Mr J. C. Thompson, heartily agreed with. ;■■■■■■'-. Cr Sandilands compared the engine and the Brigade to a little boy with a new* toy, as when it (the engine) first arrived there w;ere praotiges,,fcc , all in a heap ;. but now the interest had died oat, and the engine, wis laymg^no doubt* rusting) .without ever 1 being used for practiceThere was no actual mterest evinced in the matter*; /and; as-.no: efficient Br-ignds* ■was p*;oc?.2»vJ>!r»f > wp*' ts.se Aonl .*: tl-s
