STATE SCHOOLS IN DANGER.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR. Sir, — I cannot on the eve of a general election, allow your last issue prior to that great event, to go forth without raising my voice against the proposed movement "to give aid to denominational schools. What da we find in the large centres ? Why, that the Catholics, as a body, plump for the candidate on the denominational ticket and, I ask, how is this great body of electors influenced ? Why, simply by their clergy and leaders, who see the great benefit their religion will derive from the proposed grants and why should any religion be bolstered up in our young country by State aid. Our forefathers fought, and fought well, for our glorious Protestantism, but there are some so-called Protestants even in this our little district of Rangitikei, who are doing all they can to undo that which has necessarily caused so much waste of property, spilling of blood, and slaughter of life in the dark ages. Schools in towns will spring up like mushrooms, and the cost to the State will be so. great that the country schools will have to be closed, and our country youth will grow up in ignorance. Hoping the bulk of the electors will give this matter the fullest consideration before recording their votes tomorrow. — I am, &c. Protestant.
