Another Maori Scare
(per press association.) Auckland, This Day. The whole city was thrown into a state of excitement again this morning by another expedition against the Maoris. At two o'clock an armed force, consisting of Inspector Brown, Sergts, Gamble and Bernard, 20 Constables, Detectives Ede and Chrystal, Capt Morrison and 35 men of the Permanent Force, accompanied by Mr Lewis, Under-Secretary, left by a special train for Mercer, en route of Pukekawa, Tawhaio's settlement, the object being to arrest Here Kaihau, Tawhaio's secretary, who some months ago destroyed a trig station in the Upper Thames district, and thus interfered with the surveys. A summons was issued, but Eaihau ignored it. A warrant was then issued, and in the dead night the Government emmissaries burring about, and the Railway Station where the force assembled was a scene of great excitement. The party arrived at Mercer Boon after daybreak, when Eaihau gave himself up to the leaders of the force. Tawhiao said they were qu : t3 satisfied, but the Government should sift the whole case to the bottom.
