For all information as to dates &c, &c, we refer our readers to the advertisements. It is'nt always ferrets, or weasels, or c?tf that do the mischief in a chickenrising establishment, as the following incident will show. A gentleman not many miles from Feilding had a fine brood of young chicks, over whose welfare he watched with all the anxiety of a hen duck-inother, and that is saying a good deal. But, notwithstanding this, they disappeared " one by one away." Cats were blamed, weasels or ferrets suspected, and doubts cast on the honesty of rats. Poison was laid, traps set and careful watch and ward kept at all hours. Still the brood was getting small by degrees and beautifully less, while the criminals were undetected. At last, after the case had apparently become hopeleis, the villains were unmasked. With the other birds, there were two domesticated seagulls, who from their general modesty of demeanour and discretion, were looked upon as models of rectitude. Not the slightest suspicion was directed towards them, and any reflections cast on their honesty would have been treated as an insult to the family ; yet they were the offenders. Yesterday there was a sudden commotion in the yard, and on one of the young ladies of the family running out to " ascertain the cause," she was shocked to discover one of the seagulls in the act of swallowing a full-grown chick, while its mate stood by aiding and abetting. A stick and a few stones thrown in rapid but erring succession, startled the would -be murderer who, with a muscular jerk of his throat, threw the alarmed chicken on to terra firma, whence he fled on the wings of terror to the bosom of his anxious mother. It would appear that the seagull had not taken into calculation the fact that the capacity of his throat had not kept pace with the growth of the chicken, and what was an easy and pleasant task a fortnight ago was an impossibility to-day. Hence these tears. A preliminary announcement appears to-day that the young and talented Basonicas will give two of their noyel and popular performances in the Assembly Boomß on Monday and Tuesday the 17th and 18th instants. The public of Feilding and surrounding districts have thus a great treat in store for themselves. They have travelled with great success, and the Press has been unanimous iu speaking of thain in golden terms. Fuller particulars will be given in future advertisements and in posters.
