Sporting

(Notes bt Carbine.) Sinoe the weights appeared for the Wanganui Jockey Club's Spring Meeting, the newly-appointed Handicapped ha* been having a rough time 6f.it between the local sporting writers and discontented owners. No leas than six horses have been scratched since the weights appeared. If these handicaps are a sample of; what Mr Hately is going to ask owners to contend with, I am inclined to think th« profits of Wanganui and Egment Clubs will be but very siuall at the end of th» season. .■•;■- • _ , ? It is quite evident the performances of the horses were never considered when the handicaps were being framed. I wilt quote the running of Cheque, Boqlanger, and Lady Ledger in the last ' Feilding; Handicap, when they finished in the following order — Boulanger, 7-7, 1; Cheque, 8-6,2; Lady Ledger, 6-4/$. Boulanger won by a head, Lady Ledger two lengths behind Cheque. Since then Cheque bm.% .never Btarted, and Mr Hately handicaps Boulanger at 9-5, Cheque 8-6, and Lady Ledger 7-12. It will thus be seen that Boulanger meets Cheque on 261bs worse? terms, and Lady Ledger on 221bs worse. What possible show can they have .with. Cheque. By far the worst treated in thetwo fiat' races is Josephine.' She could get no nearer than third in the mile and a half Hack racia at Marion last months carrying 7-7. She is now handicapped at 8-0 over the same distance ; among, racehorses. Josephine, met Cheque only twice, and this was in the two, hack, races at Palmerston last February. J Cheque ctrriad 10-10 and 10-7 respectively, and won both races, Josephine "with 7-7 and 7-9 failing to get a place:. mare is. now handicapped within (Jibs of Cheque,, or I might say on sst 81b8 worse iejrms. What a wonderfully improved mare:' will Josephine need to be to be able to %eat. Cheque. At the Steeplechase Meeting in Wanganui last May she started in thfr Flying with 6-0 and finished nowhere^ Montrose, ; the winner, carrying 7-12. He is now handicapped in the Trial Stake* (the same distance) at 8-10, -an iaoreas& of 121b8; Josephine is handicapped^ at 7-10, an increase of 241bs.^JMontroser must therefore hold her safe. Betina ia another mare that is shamefolly treated^ In the Hurdle Bace Asper and Ber» are placed on the same mark-^with that good performer Gladins. Matchless, a maiden, is asked to carry the same weight aa good performers like Wardrobe «nd Waipipi. There are a number of other horses very unfairly treated, but wanrof space prevents me from pointing then* out.
