At a meeting of the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company, Six John Pender said the colonies were certain to cooperate in the endeavour to establish a 4s per word rate on the terms offered by the Company, and New Zealand was likely to join. Mr Duncan, editor of the Matrimonial News, against whom £10,000 damages were recently awarded in a breach of promise case, has been charged with fraudulent bankruptcy. The summons against Mr Harrison for taking part in the riots at Tipperary has been withdrawn. The counsel for the defendants have applied for a summons calling on Mr Balfour to produce the official reports of the speeches of the accused, and point out the portions on which a oonviction is sought to be obtained. 'The Daily Chronicle hopes that Western Australia, now it is entrusted with responsible Government, will refrain from mortgaging the future. The total quantity, of wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom is 1,714,000 quarters, and for the Continent 632,000 quarters. The American visible supply is estimated at 18,592,000 bushels. Bank of New Zealand shares (new issue) are quoted at £1 10s. Galvanised iron, Gospel Oak brand, £16 15s per ton. A cargo of wheat, per ship Blair Drummond, which left Port Pirie on 19th September, has been sold at 87s 3d. The New Zealand and Australian Land Company will declare a dividend of 10 per cent. October 28. The eleotion for the vacancy in Eccles seat, caused by the death of the Hon. A. J. F. Egerton, took place to-day, and resulted in the return of Mr Boby, Home Ruler, who polled 4901 votes, against 4691 obtained by Colonel Egerton, who stood in the Tory interests. The consistent support which Mr Boby promised to give to the miners and Eight Hours' Bill gained him the election. The Times says that an ecclesiastical commission is making large purchases of Colonial stocks in preference to consols. At Plymouth to-day the Duke of Edinburgh unveiled the monument which has been erected in commemoration of the defeat of the Spanish Armada. After the ceremony, concluded there was a grand naval and military display. Madrid, October 28. Small-pox has been out -in this city. Over SOOxesidents have been attacked by it. Bio de Jankieo, October 22. A Portuguese battalion has been formed in this city, and has started for Zambesi. Pams, October 23. Under the revised tariff flax and hemp will be admitted free into France, but cereals, live stock, and meat will be charged the maximum rate.
