Owing to the alleged systematic intimidation of crews by the labor combinations, the Shipping Federation is maturing a scheme to lay up every vessel in every port of the United Kingdom. This 1 will involve the stoppage of mining and 1 many other industries. The organisation is being rapidly perfected to enable all to ' act at a giyen signal. The Gas Companies, in anticipation, are laying in large ' stocks of coal. ] October 21. TheTainui's seamen and firemen have ' struck owing to the shoremen being employed repairing machinery. Mr T. Mann has appealed to the dock- j ers to continue subscriptions for Australia until the collapse is confirmed. A Free Labour Society is being formed in Southampton, and half the executive is composed of employers. The Times applauds the decision of the shipowners to lay up the vessels unless tbe Unionists conclude a permanent agreement on reasonable terms. The Trades Union Congress has sent £1000 to Australia by cable. The Sailors' Union are arranging to send £1000. Mr iVlurphv has cabled Home that Mr Champion is an enemy of the labour party. The strikers are still «truggling, and wdi win if assistance is afforded. Melbourne, October 22. The master butchers have decided to lockout the men on Saturday, unless they conform with the new rules. The Slaughtermen's Union will remain pas sire, and allow members of the Union to be locked out. It is understood that the butchers refuse to cut up meat killed by free labour, Sydney. October 21. A Conference of the Western, Southern, and Northern miners has begun. A Conference takes place between the Southern mine owners and the men next week, which it is anticipated will lead to a permanent settlement. While a number of free labourers were proceeding to w?rk at a mine at Buili, several trucks came flying down the incline. They were stopped in time to prevent a calamity, and the tram again attempted to proceed. Crowds of men and women then lay down on the rails and refused to budge- The train had to return but a body of troops were despatched to the scene, and another attempt will be made to get the free labourers to the pit to-morrow. Chbistchubch, October 21. The Mayor has informed the Labour Demonstration Committee that 'finding that the merchants and trades people do not intend closing on October 28, he cannot take the responsibility of proclaiming a publio holiday. Auckland, October 21. Several of the lumpers who were out on strike applied at the Union Company's offices to-day for work, but were not taken on as there were no vacancies.
