A man named Henry Dickson, a lab ourer about 50 years of age, committed suicide in Bond street shortly after 8 this evening by placing a dynamite cartridge at the back of his head aud ex plodmg it. The whole of the back of his Lead and right hand were blown away, but his face was uninjured. He recently came from from ilindon, on the Oiago Central line, where he had been working unl he appears to have been short of money. Hokitika, October 16. Mr R. J. Seddon has coramenoed his election campaign, and has been address ing meeting* at d.flvrent centres. Al Arabura he was presented with a purse of sovereigns by the electors, who were iv his former constituency. He. spoke very strongly against the Union Steam Company monopoly, asserting that it -swnyed the actions of the G vemuient and Parliament. Cabtbbton, October 16. Our farmers and sheepowners are going to hold a meeting to consider the new clause i> the She^p Act which makes wool branding compulsory, unless a majority of the owners, representing^ not less than two-thirds of the sheep, object. Oil and ruddle branding is ineffectual and tar injuries the wool. Branding is also regard ed as of very lit le pratical use for indentific»tion purposes in prevention of theft. Many of the farmers »i..i -ule compulsion and a petition ag-.inst it in this locality will probably be got up. Timaru, October 17.
