O'Connor, the oarsman, ha» sailed for Canada. ; Doubts are expressed as to Messrs Dillon and O'Brien really having sailed for the United States at all. The death is announced of J. E. Thorold Rogers, Professor of Political Economy at Oxford University. ; The cargo of the ship Wellington, which returned to port owing to a oollision in the Channel, has sustained no damage.
The statu of the late Rev Dr Lang haß been completed. Five girls and one man were killed and many persons were injured by a fire which broke ojdt in a hat factory at Smitbfield. October 14. Obituary — Professor Sellars aged 65. The Times suggests that steps should be taken to retain in England the mining exhibits now on exhibition- at the Crystal Palace, for the purposes of technical education. The Saltation Army celebrated the funeral service of the late Mrs Booth at the Olympia with an impressive service. Forty thousand persons were present, and there were many touching scenes. Messrs Murray, Roberts and Go. have reoeived the following wool cable from their London firm, Messrs Sanderson, Murray and Co., under date London, 10th October :— " Compared with opening rates the market for combing greasy merino, good to extra good, has advanced 1\ to 10 per cent. ; for combing scoured merino, sto 7} per cent. ; clothing merino, 2£ to 6 per cent. ; crossbred, 2£ to 5 per cent. Sales have dosed firm." Biblin, October 14. A great Socialist Congress is being held at Halle, a town of Prussian Saxony, and ia chiefly attended by German delegates. Lisbon, October 14. The Portuguese press are again making vicious attacks on Great Britain, and inspiring the populace to attack the British residents. Madbid, October 14. News has been received that the Spanish expedition, sent from the Phil- j lippine Islands to punish the natives of the Caroline Islands who surprised and killed a Spanish ofiaoer and 27 men, has been successful. The garrison stormed the native position, and the losses of the latter were heavy, while the attacking party lost one officer and several men. Capetown, October 18. The B.M.S. Bimutaka sailed for New Zealand yesterday.
